Campbell Recital Hall, Braun Music Center
Have you ever wondered about the structure of music―is it merely an accident of history that our music sounds the way it does? We currently send snippets of Bach across galaxies, seeking to tantalize highly developed aliens. Is there any reason they should appreciate our definition of an aesthetically pleasing series of tones? This talk considers our practices of tonal music from the point of view of mathematical physics, and offers mathematical explanations for our experiences of musical pleasure or displeasure. We will ask, and try to answer, the following questions: Is there a logic to musical notation, and a reason why the named notes A through G repeat (rather than continue through the alphabet)? What is the consequence of well-tempered tuning? What would have happened if Beethoven had been happy when he wrote his Symphony No. 5? These questions and others will be addressed through a variety of piano pieces and excerpts, ranging from Chopin to Rachmaninoff, Debussy to Gershwin.

We're planning a field trip to Lemos Farm.

Lemos Farm

Location: Lemos Farm

When: Wednesday, October 17, 3:00PM

Hello Sloan Partners!

Bring your kids for some fun to Lemos Farm! We're planning a field trip to Lemos Farm. This is a great place for children of all ages. The farm includes a hayride, pony ride, train ride, petting zoo, air jump, snack (cookie and lemonade) a small pumpkin and much more. For more information visit the website below.

Lemos Farm is 30 minutes from Stanford. We're leaving Stanford at 3pm sharp, arriving at Lemos Farm around 3:30pm. The farm closes at 5pm but we'll have time for 1 trip around the farm. Thea Swenson made reservations under "Sloans"

WHEN: Wednesday, Oct. 17, 3:00pm

WHERE: Lemos Farm http://www.lemosfarm.com/

face=verdana, geneva size=2>WHO: Children of all ages and adults.

WHY: Because your kids want to have some fun and spend time away from accounting, modeling and economics that dad and mom bring home.

ADMISSION: $8.50/per child, $2/adults, chaperones are free. (this price is if we have a group of 25, price may be a little bit higher if we have <25)

We chose Wednesday at 3pm because Lemos farm is very crowded on weekends giving the time of year; Wednesday is a flexible day for Sloans and by 3pm most children are out of care/school. So if you are a partner and can't attend, perhaps your Sloan can bring the kids? remember, this is all for the kids to have some fun!! and for adults that still like to go on hayrides and pony rides :)

If you do not have a ride, please let myself Alian Fernandez fnaila@gmail.com or Thea Swenson theaswenson@earthlink.net know and we'll see about an arrangement.

Hope to see all the kids there!

Sloan Grown-Ups (ha!) Halloween Party

Sloan Kids Halloween Party
Sunday, October 28 – details to follow
Here are a few suggestions of where to go for Halloween costumes. There is absolutely no need to spend a lot of money renting or buying costumes (some of the most creative are ones that people just throw together). That being said, here are places where you can find masks, wigs, hats, props, you name it. Also, please keep in mind that it could be cold, so be prepared. Last year the question came up if a costume had to be scary (some parents didn’t want to frighten their kids). The answer is absolutely not! People dress up as clowns, cowboys, dogs, mermaids, you name it. Let your imagination be your guide!
Diddam's Party Store

(LOTS of stuff to choose from - fairly inexpensive)
Spirit Halloween Superstore Online

Even if you don’t want to order online, you might want to take a look at this website for ideas.
Goodwill Store
El Camino Way (corner of West Meadow just off of El Camino Real)
Palo Alto
(used clothing and items - lot of Halloweenie stuff - very inexpensive)
Cynthia's
1313 Laurel Street, Suite 206
San Carlos

(haven't been there, but have heard it's pretty good - may be pricey)
The Costume Bank
169 State Street

(lots of costumes to rent, but can be a little pricey)
Trappings of Time

Hope this helps - happy haunting!

Indian restaurant

We've got a few places but by the most favorite in our house is Darbar; an Indian restaurant on Lytton, a block or two from University Ave. The atmosphere and service is just ok, but the food is great!
